Mam3aes and the papas had a sound that helped to define a portion of years 60. Their classic works popular cupping glasses inside had a small piece of psychedelia of woven San Francisco, and, in spite of the sweet harmonies, there was also a perceivably dark sensation to something of his more popular work. & quot; California Dreamin& #039; & quot; and & quot; Monday, Monday& quot; both used to enough juniors to give a phantasmagoric edge them. To have resisted Def Leppard’s radio power in their heyday, you’d have to have been a critic–and even some of us could hardly argue with the likes of “Photograph,” “Animal,” and “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak.” Vault covers a decade and a half of hits by the one-time wonder boys of the new wave of British metal, but perhaps inevitably concentrates on singles from the multiplatinum Pyromania and Hysteria. It offers little meaning beyond fun fun fun, but there are hooks here that No…

Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles–most of which are present on this collection. These include “I Heard It through the Grapevine,” “Lodi,” “Up Around the B ,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” and of course “Bad Moon Rising.” This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introductio…

Anyone looking for the key to Abba’s enduring appeal should look no further than “Voulez Vous” and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. “S.O.S.” has a raw urgency in its chorus, and “Does Your Mother Kn…

This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton’s hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would’ve required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-’70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970′s “Your Song” through 1977′s “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word” remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they’re presented here, ’80s hits like “I’m Still St…

Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We’re missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger’s crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don’t have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, “Rock …
